(International Racing Of Champions!) 3 time BUDSHOOT OUT Winner: 2001, 2002 and 2007! He has a total of 16 wins at Daytona! Only thing left to win is the Daytona 500!

The day after the second Pocono Sprint Cup race of 2013, on August 5, while leading a sprint car race at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Stewart was involved in a multi-car crash when a lapped car spun in front of him. The hit was hard enough that Stewart broke both the tibia and fibula bones in his lower right leg. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where surgery was performed on his broken leg. A second surgery was performed on August 8, in which a metal rod was inserted into the tibia. The injuries were bad enough that Stewart’s streak of 521 consecutive Sprint Cup starts, dating back to the 1999 Daytona 500, had come to an end. He is out for the rest of the season but he WILL be back for 2014. #SmokeWillRise

1998 Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to fist fight another driver?

DEJ: Oh yeah. Did it ever come to blows?

DEJ: No, there are a lot of fines from Nascar. Who was that driver?

DEJ: Tony Stewart. We got into a little scuffle on the racetrack and it cost me several thousand dollars.



“Well, it’s still a couple of days away. I’ll be able to go home and get a couple of days rest and relax. I think Tony Stewart is going to give me a ride in the helicopter, so I’ll get part of Thursday off too.”


“Yeah. We got to be real good friends over the last year or so. When he was catching all that stuff in the press about being crazy and wild, I just knew that wasn’t the truth. I tried to stick up for him a couple of time. He appreciated that. We just got to be good friends and began hanging out a little bit.”


“I’m not real sure. I was trying to think back. We ran into each other in the Busch Series a couple of times. We had some pretty colorful arguments. At Pikes Peak, we got to beating and banging on each other. And I ran into him about six or seven times trying to get by him. He sent me into the fence on the restart. We ended up in the Busch hauler trying to get at each other and hollering and cussing and carrying on. And then the next week, we were in Milwaukee. He walked up to me and said he just wanted thing to be cool with each other. He said, ‘I think you’re cool and your dad is a good man and he’s raised you well. I do have a lot of respect for you and I just want you to know that if you want to be friend, we can be friends’. I just thought that was cool. That’s kind of when it started. That was back in ’98 or ’99. Ever since then, we’ve just gotten to be better friends year after year.”

LONG POND, PA. — Suddenly some very curious things are happening in NASCAR country, a curious rash of controversies involving some of the sport’s biggest names.

First, Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon have a celebrated run-in at Richmond. Then, moments later, Dale Jarrett and Terry Labonte have an angry run-in of their own, in a bump-and-run for the win.

Then at Michigan, Wallace and Dale Earnhardt, those two old protagonists, have a heated run-in. And Jeff Gordon makes some headlines after he doesn’t win, and series sponsor R.J. Reynolds is suddenly feeling some heat when Jimmy Spencer, the company’s driver, gets penciled in for suspicions.

And then, for those who didn’t realize the Busch tour was in Pikes Peak, Col., last weekend, NASCAR levied a $5,000 fine on Dale Earnhardt Jr. for fighting with Tony Stewart after a bruising battle on the track . . . a battle certain to heighten interest in the tour when action resumes next week at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

NASCAR’s television ratings are down this season, according to some TV people. Well, all these controversies with the sport’s top stars should do something to boost ratings. About the only stars who haven’t been drawn into some controversy with other stars are Mark Martin and Jeremy Mayfield.


In last week’s column, I predicted Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be those to watch during the Lycos 250 at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

The prediction couldn’t have been more accurate, even though neither the team were close to victory Sunday.

These two drivers are arguably the hottest two on the Busch Grand National circuit. Earnhardt Jr. is the only Earnhardt who’s really competitive these days, and he has two Busch victories already in his first official season. He has been impressive, but what did anyone expect?

The boy was practically conceived in a stock car. He probably came out of the womb knowing where the gas pedal was.

Then there is Stewart. Everyone knows I think Stewart might be one of the best race car drivers to ever grace the planet. He can drive anything with wheels.

But there are those who were surprised by the fact he could drive a stock car. Stewart was born knowing how to drive every type of race car known to man, so the success he’s found isn’t a shock.

Granted there are some other drivers making noise in the series like Casey Atwood, Matt Kenesth, and Dave Blaney, but Stewart and Earnhardt Jr. are leading the way. So during the Lycos 250, the fans got a chance to see what the future holds.

Stewart and Earnhardt Jr. put on a hell of a show for the 45,000 in attendance, but what transpired on and off the track could be the beginning of a life-long rivalry.

“Little” Dale Earnhardt Jr’s AC Delco Chevy and Stewart’ Shell Pontiac raced side by side for several laps over the last 100 miles.

There was banging actually, quite a bit. At one point, Stewart was shoved out of the groove, and lost a few positions.

A few laps later, Earnhardt Jr and Stewart were trying to get around a rather nasty-looking group of lapped cars. The No. 3 car (Earnhardt) slapped the wall, and the No. 44 car (Stewart) had some damage to the right front.

Earnhardt finished in tenth place, never being able to fight back after his brush with the wall. Stewart ran in the top six until a tire blew on the white flag lap. He finished 14th.

After the checkered flag flew, Earnhardt slowed beside Stewart, who had kept his car on the high side of turn two to avoid “collecting” other cars.

No one knows what transpired in that short conference, and there was an apparent confrontation in the pits after the race, leading NASCAR to hand down a series of penalties.

On Wednesday, the sanctioning body announced that Earnhardt Jr. would be fined $5,000 for violation of Section 12, Rule 4, Article F, which prohibits fighting in the pits, garage, track or race premises. His crew chief, Tony Eury, was fined $2,500 for Article A for actions detrimental to auto racing, and Stewart’s crew chief, Bryant Frazier, was fined $1,000 for the same offense.

All three were placed on 90-day probation. Stewart was apparently not involved in the confrontation following the race.

Earnhardt was quoted as saying bumping into Stewart was not intentional — he was not trying to take him out of the race. He also added NASCAR was not happy about their actions. Whether that refers to actions on the track or the ones after the race remains a mystery.

Stewart has not commented on the incident.

No matter what transpired on or off the track, the fans were voicing their opinions in the forms of cheers and boos. It is how rivalries get started, and this one could stick with the drivers as long as they race in NASCAR.

That was in the 90s. Now fast forward to the present…

2003 – Stewart in MIS Busch race:
When Tony Stewart fires up his engine for the Cabela’s 250 NASCAR Busch Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday August 16, his car won’t be the only thing rollin’ at MIS, as Grammy-nominated rock band 3 Doors Down will perform a post-race concert following the Cabela’s 250. Tony Stewart will be participating in his first NASCAR Busch Series race since 1998 in a car that will feature a 3 Doors Down paint scheme for Chance 2 Motorsports car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. Stewart, and Earnhardt Jr. recently appeared in the band’s latest video ‘The Road I’m On’. The Road I’m On video and song mark the follow up to 3 Doors Down’s top-selling, Grammy-nominated single, ‘When I’m Gone.’ Both songs are featured on their multi-platinum sophomore release, Away from the Sun. Tickets are still available for the Cabela’s 250, featuring the post-race concert by 3 Doors Down.
“Driving for Junior’s team meant that the Dale Earnhardt Foundation would naturally be the first recipient of any funds we raised from running the Busch race,” said Stewart.. “It’s an understatement to say that Dale meant a lot to everyone in the garage area.. I’m no exception.. Making our first donation to the Dale Earnhardt Foundation just seemed like the right thing to do.. They’re in the business of helping people too.”

2004 – Stewart returns to Michigan for the one that got away.

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Tony Stewart, still looking for that elusive NASCAR Busch Series victory to add to his resume, will return to Michigan International Speedway, August 21 in the No. 81 Chance 2/Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet.

Stewart dominated at MIS during last year’s Busch Series race only to have victory washed away by Mother Nature. He now returns to the Irish Hills for some Saturday afternoon racing fueled by redemption and motivated by winning.

“It’s something that I want to add to the list,” Stewart said, in regards to winning a Busch Series race. “Last year, we came here and we were ‘best of show’ but, that doesn’t count for anything. The Chance 2 cars are proven winners. So, I’m looking forward to putting one in the Winner’s Circle.”

Bass Pro Shops founder, Johnny Morris, is looking forward to this unique association with both Chance 2 and Tony Stewart.

“All of us at Bass Pro Shops are extremely excited about being involved with Tony, Dale Jr. and the Chance 2 team for this race,” Morris said. “Tony is an avid fisherman and long-time supporter of Bass Pro Shops. Both Tony, Martin and Dale Jr. are great ambassadors for our outdoor traditions.”

Chance 2 has compiled a long list of accomplishments throughout the 2004 season including six pole positions, five victories (4 Truex Jr., 1 D. Earnhardt Jr.) and 16 top-10 finishes. They currently are leading the NASCAR Busch Series point standings with driver Martin Truex, Jr. Chance 2 earned Bass Pro Shops their first victory this season at Talladega Superspeedway where Truex Jr. and Earnhardt Jr. finished first and second in Chance 2 prepared machines. Truex Jr. is looking forward to pairing with Stewart as a teammate for the Michigan race.

Stewart to run DEI car at LMS Busch race:
Tony Stewart will drive a DEI entry in the October Busch Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The car will carry sponsorship from Goody’s Headache Powders, which will run a contest in conjunction with the race. As part of the promotion, Goody’s will choose a Mayor of Goody’s Country. That person will then get their picture on the hood of the #8 DEI Chevy. The nomination period ends July 23 at the conclusion of the Goody’s 250 NASCAR Busch Series Race weekend at Martinsville Speedway.(more info at the DEI Site)(7-1-2006)

Dale Jr. and Stewart to run 24 at Daytona:
Howard-Boss Motorsports and Crawford Race Cars announced that veteran road racer Andy Wallace will team with NASCAR stars Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the Rolex 24 At Daytona in the #2 Crawford DP03 Daytona Prototype. “This is an exciting time for all of us at Howard-Boss Motorsports,” Rick Howard stated. “We have set our standards high with the new DP03 Daytona Prototype car. Our unique blend of driving talent with Andy Wallace, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. makes this event even more exciting, not only for our team, but for the fans of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. Our expectations are also high for our teammates in the No. 4 Boss Snowplow Dave Brule-owned car. The results of our recent test session at the Homestead-Miami Speedway are very encouraging and we’re really looking forward to the Rolex 24 At Daytona.”

Tony Stewart will be making his second start in the Rolex 24 for Crawford Race Cars. Stewart teamed with Jan Lammers and Johnny Mowlem in a Crawford SSC2K Prototype in the 2002 endurance race. After an impressive run at the front of the field, engine problems sidelined the Stewart, Lammers and Mowlem team just past the midway point in the twice-around-the-clock event.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be making his second start in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Earnhardt Jr. teamed with his father Dale Earnhardt, Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins in a Chevrolet Corvette to finish fourth overall in the 2001 event.
